Affiliate Programs
Affiliate programs are also known as associate, reseller, or
referral programs. They are revenue sharing programs between
companies (the merchant) and individuals (the affiliate). An
Affiliate can be likened to an independent contractor.
As an affiliate marketer, you are basically
self-employed and market the products and/or services of
another company. You are then paid a commission by the
company they represent for referring customers to the company's
website. Put simply, it allows merchants to extend their
marketing reach by advertising on web sites other than their
own. The web site owner, or Affiliate, gets paid a percentage
based on the sale value.
If you have a service that you provide, you could maximise
revenues by setting up your own affiliate program and letting
the power of the internet expand your market place.
When joining an internet affiliate program there are certain
things you need to do to maximise your chances of success.
Firstly, make sure the links and adverts you carry fit the
theme of your site. Don't just have a bunch of links and
banners on your site and nothing else. Content is
King! You need to have good content so your visitors
will use your site as a valuable resource. To maximise your
earning potential, try to only promote programs that are
consistent with the theme of your web site.
Make sure that the affiliate programs you join are making
your efforts worthwhile. Join those that give you a high payout
with at least 25-30% commission for each sale. Your product
should be something that you would feel comfortable purchasing
and recommending to your visitors.
If you're serious and treat this like a business and stick
at it, you will develop an income. Earning money online
is possible but not easy. The difference between those
that do and those that don't is that the successful sites
learn, adapt and persevere.
The key to success with affiliate marketing is to
choose the right program. Whilst it might be tempting to go for
the program that pays the highest commissions, you have to be
certain that the service you're promoting is of genuine
interest to the kind of people that are visiting your site, or
the people that you are attracting by advertising. See
Affiliate Networks for
those I recommend.
The key value to look for when comparing rates is the EPC
(Earnings Per Click). This gives you a value of what a program
has paid out, on average, per hundred clicks received and is a
useful guide to your earnings potential versus what you can
realistically spend in marketing.
Three basic ways for how you can make money with affiliate
programs:
1. You can sign up for an affiliate program and then
advertise it on Google AdWords. This is the quickest way to get
visibility and is a great way to start making money on a search
engine because it is so quick to set up. Read more: Google Adwords Guide.
2. The second way that you can make money is to look for a
profitable affiliate program and then build a web site around
that area. You can then get that website to the top of the
search engine and get free visitors to the website.
3. The third method is going to take the most time but could
offer more long term potential. Here you identify an area that
you are interested in, build the site, develop an opt-in
subscriber list and look for affiliate programs that fit into
that theme.
